AGAINST MY WILL: The Watch Letter
"I am preaching against my will."
Before our minds get to wondering what was meant by these words, soak them in.
Ask yourselves: When did I last do something against my will? (Not in the sense of being forced, but when you moved against your own plan/desire/idea to do something better.)
Keep reading to find out why the words above broke a change in me, and I pray will also in you.
But first: Think back to the moment when our salvation rested on Jesus surrendering his will to the Father.
Luke 22: 39 And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him. 40 And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.
41 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, 42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
Jesus lived a life "AGAINST HIS WILL." No matter what he had to endure, no matter what he had to face. He was honest with God about where he felt he was too weak or not ready, and then he laid his will down, and the Father gave him the strength and mind to go forward and accomplish God's plan.
Our pastor, Chief Apostle H.C. Gunn, was preaching one recent Sunday, but it wasn't his plan to preach. He had set things in order so that some of the younger apostles and other church elders could preach because we had had plenty of training and preparation. It was our time to be ready to bring the Word of God and allow our pastor to rest in the Lord and be fed during service instead of feeding the flock every Sunday - tirelessly and without complaint.
But the Lord turned it, and Chief Apostle Gunn needed to bring the Word that service, so he said, "I AM PREACHING AGAINST MY WILL." He was not saying it in a rebellious/complaining way at all. He was showing us that despite his Godly plans as our leader, God himself has the right at any time to change his mind or to tell him to go in another direction. And this is not the first time we have seen Chief Apostle Gunn do it. He has been showing us by example for years how to live against our own will. If God tells him and his companion, Apostle Felicia, to cancel a trip, an appointment, a service, a meeting, an event, etc., to go into prayer, fasting, worship, rest, or to take another route instead -- they change course immediately and without question.
God stirred their testimony and those words in me today and helped me make it through the day and get back on track in many areas. My body, mind, flesh, you name it, was sluggish, delayed, unwilling, and I just lost my go/fire. But then I remembered Chief Apostle Gunn teaching us what he also taught on the recent broadcast: "NOT MY WILL BUT YOUR WILL." And before I knew it, when I surrendered myself to what I knew God would want me to accomplish in my day, I got multiple things done and had renewed energy and strength. I am grateful.
Putting down one's will was not just for Jesus. He showed the apostles how to do it, and then they showed others who chose to follow Christ. Putting down one's will is not just for the pastors and the preachers; it's for everyone who professes to love the Lord because when you love someone, you consider them before yourselves. You yield your plans, way, and will to ensure they are taken care of.
I was talking to a colleague today, and we were both testifying about how our churches and the Word have helped us see things differently despite our hopes, aspirations, goals, and disappointments. And it reminded me of a special prayer Chief Apostle Gunn taught me. I have said it before on this blog, but I want to share it again.
"LORD HELP ME TO MEET YOUR NEEDS (FIRST.) AND MAKE YOUR DREAMS/GOALS COME TRUE (FIRST)."
Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. 3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.
Luke 9: 24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.
