Debris: The Watch Letter

Earlier this week, I was listening to a 2018 broadcast message from our Pastor Chief Apostle H.C. Gunn titled “A Transforming Word.”

During the broadcast, he said God had sent a special anointing over the airwaves through the message to transform our lives. It answered questions so many of us may find ourselves asking such as:

  • Why am I not moving forward?

  • Why do I keep running back to the same old ways, people, and sin?

  • Why can’t I break this habit or mindset?

  • Why do I keep struggling with these thoughts, desires, or feelings?

THE ANSWER: Debris.

Chief Apostle Gunn said, “clean up the debris.”

Oftentimes what we struggle with is an indicator that we have not gotten rid of the debris of past sin or the debris of people or things that our soul is still tied to. Getting rid of the debris is not a one-time thing. We must work daily to keep getting rid of it.

It’s just like mopping the floor but not sweeping. The appearance of dirt or stains may go away when you mop but if you walk around barefoot you will feel all kinds of trash beneath your feet from not sweeping. Sometimes that trash is hiding in the corners and crevices of the floor. You must keep sweeping until you get it.

The Lord, His Spirit, His Word, Prayer, a well-made-up mind, our Pastor, and fellowship with people who are sincerely committed to God are like brooms. They help clean up the debris in our lives and deal with the corners and crevices of our flesh.

Let’s look at the definition of debris:

  • the remains of something broken down/destroyed

  • an accumulation of fragments

  • something discarded

In the Bible chaff is another word for debris.

Matthew 3:12 says the Lord is ready to separate the chaff from the wheat.

We’ve got to get rid of the chaff in our lives because we cannot enter the Kingdom or God’s promise with chaff attached to our wheat. Only wheat can enter God’s storehouse. Psalm 1:1-6 likens chaff to wicked ways, something that must be driven away by God.

We can fool ourselves to think we are clean by saying, “I repented and prayed about that. Or I stopped physically doing that.” But the debris and the chaff can still be hiding in our hearts, thoughts, patterns, and subconscious. One way we can check for debris is examining: Who/what is drawn to us and who/what are we drawn to. Are the people/things we find ourselves in concert with calling out our wrong, telling the truth, promoting holiness, and holding us accountable or are they helping us stay unclean?

I want to leave you with some points that tie right into what Chief Apostle Gunn said on the 2018 broadcast. They are from a word he preached in July 2022.

  • Don’t go back, don’t look back.

  • If you look or go back, you might not make it back.

  • You can have soul ties from dwelling over wrong memories and old songs and photos from your past (before you were saved or while you were in sin).

  • There can be demons associated with the past and worldly things we reminisce over, and those old things and ways can live in your subconscious.

  • Stay out of the pit. Ask yourself: what’s trying to drag you back into the pit? Stay away from it.

  • God can keep you from doing, thinking, saying, feeling something that is wrong (but you have let him do it and work with him.)

  • We need the Holy Ghost to help us forgive and to help us forget/let go of the past.

  • What is it from your past that you didn’t want to send away too fast? (Meaning what is it or who is it that you secretly want to keep around or never really wanted to let go of?).

  • Fight “you,” your flesh. Fight the inner-me (enemy). Resist what you and your flesh want to do.

In closing, Chief Apostle Gunn said in that same message that the key to getting free is reading and studying God’s word. He said “read, read, read your Bible like you’ve never read it before.” He said the more you read, the more you will understand and things will start to fit together and the Word will light up in you.
