Eternal Decisions - The Watch Letter
One of the greatest blessings on this earth is to be instructed by a godly father. One of my favorite parts of my week is getting to talk with my Pastor, Chief Apostle H.C. Gunn, who has adopted me as a daughter. You cannot help but smile, feel hopeful, and feel determined after speaking with him. The peace and life of God are always present in his voice and in his guidance.
A few days ago, we were talking, and he said something that has continued to echo in my mind, and I want to be sure to share it with others. He said, every decision we make is eternal.
Often, we take our daily choices so lightly, and we take the fact that God gave us free will even more lightly, but everything we decide to do has a consequence.
A consequence is not always bad. In fact, consequence means "a result or effect of an action or condition." So, there are consequences that lead us toward our eternity in Heaven, and there are consequences that lead us to an eternity in hell.
Like Chief Apostle Gunn has said many times before, "How we live is how we die." If we live unto the Lord, we will live with the Lord eternally. If we live according to the world and its ways, which are ruled by hell, we will live in hell eternally.
As those who profess to be saved, we must be careful not to take the freedom we receive through salvation as a means to think we are exempt from the consequences of our sin and our wrong decisions.
Even as people who proclaim salvation, we can find ourselves choosing sin and hell every day if our profession is no longer in agreement with our confession of Christ. Chief Apostle Gunn has taught over the last year that our lives, our thoughts, our conduct, and our beliefs must be in agreement with God's Word. Today's post is filled with scripture to emphasize just that.
1 Corinthians 6:12 says: All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
1 Timothy 6:11-14 says: But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession; That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ.
After Chief Apostle Gunn said what he said about eternal decision-making, it was as if God shined a bright light on some of the scriptures I have read over the years, showing where I may have only taken them at the surface of what He was saying. In his Word, God is not just warning us or teaching about what is not good for us while we are on earth. If we believe that, then we are underestimating his love, because His love is eternal. He cares about how we spend eternity, and he wants our eternity to be just as he promised Jeremiah: "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
God tells us to turn away from sin not just to please him and meet his commandments, but he knows that if we choose eternity in hell, we will be tortured by the sin we refused to give up while on earth, and he loves us too much to want to see us endure that. That is why he allowed his only begotten son, who was sinless, to be tortured on the cross on earth in exchange for the death we deserve as sinners, because he wanted to give us every opportunity to be spared from the torture of sin and hell.
("And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name. Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them." - Revelation 14)
So, how can we make decisions with heavenly consequences versus hell-bound consequences?
During a recent broadcast, Chief Apostle Gunn said, "Realign yourself with the Word of God; don't align yourself with the world." Which reminds me of something else he taught in May of this year: Be willing to let God set in our hearts what we should pray (and do).
If I sincerely want to make godly decisions that will usher me into his eternal presence, then I must first decide to allow him to rule and lead my heart every day in the present.
Colossians 3: If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience.... And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom....
