Power Outage - Without His Spirit: The Watch Letter

A few months ago, Chief Apostle H.C. Gunn preached on the importance of the Holy Ghost in our lives. As I was looking in my Bible today, I ran across a message he preached a few years ago about the Holy Ghost. I will share what I found below. But reading what he preached made me ask: How serious am I taking the Holy Ghost? How important is it to me to have the Holy Ghost dwelling in me? How hard do I work to stay filled with the Holy Ghost?

One thing Chief Apostle Gunn has always taught us: We are supposed to be after meeting God’s needs and doing His will every day. And this is where the Holy Ghost comes in. For thousands of years, God has been speaking through His prophets about how the Holy Ghost helps us to accomplish His goals in the earth. As Apostle Felicia Gunn says: God doesn't waste words. But if we don’t care about accomplishing God’s goals, we won’t care about receiving or staying filled with His Holy Ghost. Chief Apostle Gunn also teaches us that if we meet God's needs, he will meet ours. We have it backwards though. We think we are only here for God to meet ours.

Joel 2:28-29: I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my Spirit.

Here are some points/questions taken from what Chief Apostle Gunn preached a few years ago about the Holy Ghost:

  • Do we sincerely believe God for our filling or refilling of the Holy Ghost?

  • We need to be filled with the Holy Spirit, not the spirit of our last name.

  • Ask God to fill you!

  • When you don’t get filled with the Holy Spirit, you will be filled with another spirit.

  • What are we trying to replace God (and His Spirit) with?

  • God has a map for our life that’s better than GPS. (The Holy Ghost is our guide.)

  • Do you know what the Holy Ghost is saying today and what is he telling you about you?

When Jesus was with the disciples, he taught them about the Holy Ghost because he is what would enable them to maintain their commitment to the Lord and to do what he commanded. He showed them they needed power from God’s Spirit to fulfill all things. In Luke 24:49, he told them to stay in the city until they received the power of the Holy Ghost to go out and be his witnesses.

This month, Chief Apostle Gunn has been teaching a series “It’s a Spiritual Thing” on our radio broadcast and there is such an urgency and fire in the teaching.

How are we trying to be saved and serve God without God’s Spirit and without being concerned about the things of the Spirit? Chief Apostle Gunn said those who worship God must worship Him in Spirit and Truth. The Holy Ghost is what allows us to worship in the Spirit and the Holy Ghost is also the Spirit of Truth (John 16).

We must stop wanting to stay on the surface of just saying we got saved. Chief Apostle Gunn has always asked us: What happens after you come to the altar or surrender to Jesus?

To work out our salvation, we must pursue and hold on to the Holy Ghost by also pursuing and holding on to holiness. It is our desire for holiness that allows the Holy Ghost to dwell in us and do what the Lord sent him to do. But our actions, decisions, and lack of care can cause the Holy Spirit to be un-welcomed and cause us to reject Him from our lives. Without the Holy Ghost, we are not sealed in the will of God. We have no power to live for Him at all costs, and that's what causes us to be lukewarm, backslide, walk away, rebel, or go unrecovered.

Ephesians 4:30-32: ... Grieve not the Holy Spirit ... whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamour, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

I want to work on getting rid of everything that is blocking the Holy Ghost from having a forever home in me and giving me the power I need to please my Lord and my Father forever.

Jesus taught that the Holy Ghost is directly from God the Father and that Jesus sends him to our lives to comfort us and give us peace (these help us to not seek comfort and satisfaction by conforming to the world). Jesus said that the Holy Ghost teaches us all things and brings all things God has spoken to our remembrance. The Holy Ghost helps us sincerely praise because he testifies about Jesus in us and glorifies him. Jesus also taught that the Holy Ghost guides us in all things, "and reproves us of sin, righteousness, and judgment." He helps us overcome fear in the world and instead shows us how to fear (reverence) God.

The Apostle Paul said the Holy Ghost helps us with our weaknesses, helps us to know what to pray, and will intercede for us when we don’t know what to say or do unto God. The Holy Ghost helps us express ourselves to God and to others as God’s witnesses.

Jesus said the world can’t receive the Holy Ghost. So, if we have not been filled, have no desire to be filled or refilled, or have caused the Holy Ghost to be grieved where he can’t abide, then we somewhere are still in the world.
