The Pit of the Past and the Inner-Me: The Watch Letter

During a recent service at The Body of Christ, Inc., our Pastor, Chief Apostle H.C. Gunn, told us how God was dealing about His power and His might. When we think of the words power and might, we think of physical strength, perhaps even conquering something in war and battle.

But what the Lord was talking about was how his power and his might work through counsel and instruction. Receiving counsel and instruction may be two things we try to avoid the most when it comes to our walk with Christ and that is why we find ourselves stuck and off track, or feeling weak, powerless and inconsistent.

We look for the blessings, encouragements, and declarations, but when it comes to God himself or his prophet telling us what must be done or needs to be done and how to do it, we have a problem with it and back away from it - we go backward right into rebellion - remember Lot's Wife. Mostly we do this because of the greatest enemy ruling in our lives, which Chief Apostle showed us is the "inner-me." The devil is our enemy too but there is only so much he can do, he only do what God or we allow him to. But too often we let our "inner-me" have all the power in our lives because the "inner-me" pacifies us ... but pacify is not the same as satisfy. Only God and His word can satisfy us.

The "inner-me" wars against instruction and counsel. It does not want to do what is right in God's sight but instead what feels right to the flesh. And if we let our "inner-me" win we will never experience God's victory. Because the most powerful thing in the universe is God's word - whether spoken, read, exhorted, or written.

God's word made the earth and all that is in it just like that, so imagine what listening to His word through instruction and counsel and reading the Bible could do in your life? (A reminder from our Pastor: Remember to read the Bible out loud so that the word goes into your atmosphere and into your heart - faith comes by hearing.) Remember the Bible teaches us to resist the devil and he will flee, and we can do the same with our "inner-me." Resist your flesh! Fight doing things your way and hasten to do things God's way. You cannot please God if you don't listen. Because faith pleases God, and faith comes from listening.

  • Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers, and blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord. Proverbs 16:20

  • Whoever heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray. Proverbs 10:17

So, since we are talking about instruction and counsel, I want to share two things I am working on that Chief Apostle Gunn and his beautifully saved wife, Apostle Felicia, shared.

To the church body, Chief Apostle Gunn said: Don't go back and don't look back. Find out where you still have soul-ties to your past or people you were connected with. If you go back to the past, you might not make it back to your present. Be careful about relishing old photos and memories from your life of sin. Because if you bring those things back up, you bring back the demons tied to what you were doing then, and the same goes for reconnecting or trying to hold on to someone, someplace, or something from your past that was tied to sin and wickedness.

Stay out of the pit! Old ways, old memories, old things, old habits, and old desires are trying to drag you back into the pit. What if you can't make it out? In the Bible, people were instructed to burn up and utterly destroy the wicked things? What do we need to burn up and destroy that we're still holding on to?

Apostle Felicia recently shared with me that sometimes things you are facing in your body, your mind, or in your life, in general, can be tied to something in your past you did, believed, accepted, yielded your mind to, or body to, etc. She explained that we have to get before God and ask him to bring forward the things we have not dealt with, cleaned up, or confessed so that we can be delivered.

There can be some things that are just sleeping in us that need to be dead. And that's why we need counsel and instruction from God and to work with our Pastor to get insight on what is the root of things, and what is happening behind the scenes and in the spirit that needs to be dealt with. We could be going along in our lives thinking we have overcome something because we got saved, but because it is sleeping and not dead then when we least expect it our inner-me or the enemy will send it a wake-up call. This is another reason why we must ensure that the people we are close to are people who will not help us feed our "inner-me," but help us destroy it by telling us Godly truth and being willing to speak up when we are wrong.

I am going to take time to work on these things because I want to be all the way free. I don't want to be half-delivered or lukewarm or unready to be received into God's kingdom!

To me, instruction and counsel are two of God's greatest blessings and miracles. Simple words can change your life and heal and redeem you!

Here are some scriptures Chief Apostle Gunn gave us to study: Psalm 25, Psalm 49, Psalm 112, and Mark 11.
