Who Cares? - The Watch Letter
The Blessing of The Cheese
Who cares? It's a saying used to stress that something is not important. But sometimes that saying is not always coming from our mouths, it's coming from our hearts.
This week, Chief Apostle H.C. Gunn had us study the Book of Mark. Truly it was an on-time instruction. The whole book is a washing for our souls. There is so much treasure in God's Holy Word!
One scripture that stood out to me was Mark 7:15: There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.
What if our "who cares" in our hearts is defiling our whole lives and those/everything around us? Don't believe me keep reading.
Philippians 2:4
“Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.”
The Lord commands us to not just be hearers of the word or even to just be rejoicers over the word, we must be doers. So, let us ask ourselves at this moment: How are we looking after others and how are we helping to meet the needs of others? Are we operating with an "every man for himself" or " me and mine" mentality? Do we only see who is in our mirror or who is in our house? How far have the eyes of your heart reached today to see about someone else?
I am thankful that we have a pastor who teaches us the importance of care. The testimony of his care reaches around the world. And that's because he is fully submitted to God, who is the father of care. From the moment he created mankind, God cared for us with great love and sacrifice. He could have easily left us unto ourselves but he came down from his throne and continues to do so, in many ways, to see about us. If God can get off his throne to care, why can't we get up off of our chairs?
Care is a precious thing in the eyes of the Lord. And it also matters to him who and what we care about. Some people can care more about distant, dead-beat relatives than someone who is in their lives every day. Some can care more about an abuser and user than they do about a faithful member of the body who sacrifices all they have for others. Some people can care more about their co-workers than their children. And the list goes on.
Care is defined as the provision of what is necessary for the health, welfare, maintenance, and protection of someone or something. The word has nothing to do with self. It is about someone other than you. Whose welfare, health, maintenance and protection have you executed today? Beyond yourself and those who live in your home? Beyond your bloodline? Beyond the people who you like or are in your comfort zone? Beyond the people who give you stuff in return?
Jesus said to Peter: “But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren” (Luke 22:31–32).
Yes, our ability to walk in the faith and be faithful to God is tied to having a converted heart, one that is undefiled with "self," and that is willing to strengthen our brothers and sisters and willing to build up and support the body.
If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? (1 John 4:20)
People often go around the scripture above and what it means because they give the excuse "I am Christian or I am saved. I don't/can't hate anybody," but hate can also be found in not extending yourself to help when you know someone is in need, not participating in serving others, not helping God execute his plan by being willing to get involved, etc. All of these are acts of love, and if you don't want to do them, then yes you are a hater.
Also, when we fail to care, we fail to love God. You can't care for God if you do not care for the people he places in your life or calls you to care for. That is enmity with God. Who is God calling you to care for that you refuse to because you don't want that care to cause you to give up something for yourself?
God is calling us out and he is asking: Who (Really) Cares? He is looking for the ones who care. As Chief Apostle Gunn once said: Can God Find You?
While we have convinced ourselves that only caring for ourselves or people who we think benefit us, will build up our wealth, make us happy or make us satisfied we are dead wrong. Chief Apostle Gunn taught us the other day that: If you do what God says to do, you won't be in famine. So, since God's word says to love thy neighbor as ourselves, which is one of the two greatest commandments and which means to put others before you, if we are not doing that we should expect a life of famine.
Psalm 107: 33: He turneth rivers into a wilderness, and the watersprings into dry ground; 34 A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein.
Chief Apostle Gunn also taught us about David from another perspective. His anointing, his blessing from God, his prosperity, and his elevation to the king all came about through care and service. David's father sent him on a mission to check on his brothers, and help the army with the supply of food. God used David's willingness to carry cheese to others. Once he got there and obeyed his father's call to care, he encountered God's open door to his future: defeating Goliath, which came with great blessing not only from the king but from God.
1 Samuel 17:18:
Bring also these ten cuts of cheese to the commander of their thousand, and look into the welfare of your brothers, and bring back news of them.
Why did God choose David? Because he had already decided to live of care. He was a good shepherd. He sacrificed his own life often to ensure the sheep were healthy, protected, maintained, and in good welfare, which as I shared below is the definition of care and it is also the qualities required of a king.
Chief Apostle Gunn also said your goal has got to be God. If your greatest prize is not God, then self is surely your God. If you are making plans to get what you want and do what you want then God is not your Goal. If God is your goal, you want to please him. You want to follow his agenda and his agenda includes:
Hebrews 13:16
Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.
Luke 9:23
If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
So: WHO CARES?
