Why Are We Still Separated from God

Romans 8:39: “Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” This scripture is literally telling us nothing can separate us from the love of God, BUT why are we still separated? We choose to let sin and ourselves separate us from God’s love. Love is God, so if you are separated from love, are you separated from God?
